ORANGE COOKIES

Bears and sweets. Is there anything more inseparable? Ok, bears and cubs not withstanding. If you tried the BBQ sauce, then you know this bear takes his food about as serious as he takes his scooter (a magnificent 2000 FXDWG totally tricked out) and his men. Tall boots are an entirely different situation, but again, I digress. Speaking of tall boots, cruise on over to www.stompersboots.com sometime and give Uncle Frank my regards.

Martha has nothing on me when it comes to these cookies (she is the anti-christ afterall). An almost cake like texture and a wonderful hint of orange. I wish I could take credit for this one, but this was one of my Momma’s recipes and I think you’ll agree it’s a serious cookie.

1 cup shortening (even better if you use real lard)
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour milk (sour milk can easily be made by adding 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to the milk)
1 teaspoon baking soda (in the milk)
1 teaspoon baking powder
grated rind and juice of one orange
4 cups flour

Cream the shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add baking soda to the sour milk and then add to creamed mixture. Add baking powder, juice, rind and flour. Beat well (like I have to remind you). Drop from a teaspoon, 2 inches apart onto a greased baking sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool on rack.

Orange Butter Icing
Once cookies are cool, time to ice them. This is an easy icing and is what makes these cookies so damn good. Take my advice and double this recipe for the above batch of cookies you just made, there is no such thing as “too much icing” in life. Nor is there such as thing as “too much chrome”.

2 1/2 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 cup sifted confectioner’s sugar (yes, SIFT IT)
1 1/2 tablespoon orange juice
2 teaspoons grated orange rind

Blend butter and sugar together. Stir in orange juice and rind until smooth. Generously ice well cooled cookies.

Final hints. This cookie is best when you store them away in an air tight container let them “ripen” for a few days. I do this by taking a LARGE air tight container, placing a layer of cookies in and then covering them with waxed paper. Add another layer of cookies and waxed paper. Seal the box and hide for a few days.

Cubs take note; these cookies will get you out of all sorts of trouble with Papa Bear. Trust me on this point, I know from where I speak…

Keep the rubber side down.
